Meeting someone abroad for the first time is exciting. It should also be boring on paper. The romance can be spontaneous; the logistics should not be.
1. Keep your own paper trail
Book your own flight and your own room, in your own name, with confirmations saved offline and shared with one trusted person at home. If plans change, you can change them without asking anyone for permission or a password.
2. Verify identity twice, in two different ways
A video call shows a face, not an identity. Before you book, cross-check a second signal: a consistent social history, a live call from a recognizable location, or documents shared voluntarily and checked calmly. One signal is a story. Two independent signals start to be verification.
3. Tell someone the plan, in writing
Send a friend your flight numbers, hotel address, and daily check-in times before you leave. Agree on what silence means and what they should do if they do not hear from you.
4. Keep a way home that no one else controls
Carry a payment method and enough reserve to rebook a flight on your own. Hope the trip goes exactly as planned. Fund the version where it does not.
5. Meet in public first, every time
First meetings happen in busy, public places, with your own transport to and from. Trust is built across a visit, not granted at the airport.
None of this kills romance. It protects it, by making sure the only surprises on the trip are good ones.
